A Riječanke i Riječani (patriciji) nepresušno teku dalje.

Nata a Sušak, vive a Podkilavac.

Margareta was born in Sušak and lives in Podkilavac. She has been sculpting and painting since 1999, and for years worked on the great non-commercial theme of „how the old lived and dressed at the turn of the 19th-20th century“. Along with this theme, she has put together several varieties of “jaslica” (the crib of baby Jesus or nativity) to which were added new elements: the first Croatian kings; Tomislav, Krešimir and Zvonimir in a connection to our national history and historical pride, as expressed in her catalogue by Theodor de Canziani, prof.

The pottery of Margareta Krstić is characterised by an extraordinary qualitative development. Initially self-educated in her „calling“ from the rich land of her childhood surroundings, just as it was through time immemorial for our broad culture of ancestors, connecting, dividing and shaping, Margareta has come to produce an acquisition of experience and her feelings inspired by the prompts of her childhood. The very thematic connection she has for her commentary on the everyday life of her surrounding which is steadily disappearing gives us an honest statement about generations which although are considered the past could still indeed have been living until recently, such as the last milk-carrier Matilda, the water-bearers, wood-carriers, washer-women and all that which meant living and surviving in Grobnik, and all the traditions which arose from it.

Another series of her sculptures are those of a religious character and in particular following the motif of the nativity scenes which are realised in countless variations with almost childish enthusiasm. Nativities are derived in a variety of different ceramic techniques (Villanovian, Bucchero, Raku, Terracotta etc.) and inspired by the most widely ranged influences of surroundings both nearby and far away, yet encompassing the whole world, from Grobnik and Rijeka to Verona, Cuneo, Assisi, Lublin and Bethlehem.

Margareta Krstić has exhibited her cribs worldwide in representation of the Republic of Croatia. Solely because of her an exhibition of Nativity scenes from all around the world came to us in Rijeka in 2008/09. Owing to Margareta Krstić this event occurred in our town as it was the worldwide showing of her authentic nativities each year at the big global exhibitions such as in Verona and other European cities which attracted the attention of the organiser (curator of the Bethlehem Museum in Bethlehem, Dr. Alfredo Troisi) into this unique exhibition in Croatia and Rijeka. Hence, it was by the wishes of the organiser entirely, that at the Rijeka exhibition of nativity scenes from around the world, held in the Maritime & History Museum on the Croatian coast in Rijeka, she got both the largest and the most representative exhibition space. Margareta put together the first Rijekan nativity scene, in the Raku technique and a height of 40-60cm, in which with the holy family also appeared „Rijekans“. This is a true Rijekan specialty, „morčići“, in hundreds of variations. All Moors, Turks and Indians in a variety of colour and forms conjured up for Rijekans and the world as a whole. Rijekans were for the first time immortalised in nativity scene alongside the holy family during the Christmas season. Inspiration for this still comes from the immemorial Grobnik and legends about the adornment and decoration indigenous to Rijeka. From a synopsis of the books of Riccard Gigante, Radmila Matejčić and Theodor de Canziani continues a synthesis of that mark which is the most familiar in long-standing Rijekan identity, "His Excellency" Morčić, and concepts of nativity which lead us to a wonderful discovery: „Moro is born! And Rijekans, the patrons, continue unwaveringly onward.“ So, with pride, both loud and clear we say: „Unstoppable!“

This theme has not at all diminished for her and indeed she still works on every original yet familiar unique (having made around 1100 figures of 40-70cm).

She also works on the great thematic piece of the Marijan collection, within which complexity she has shaped angels, The Way of the Cross and the whole range of religious sceneries from denunciation to resurrection in both relief and sculpture.

Deutch
